Each and every year, millions of students attend college, working their way academically to a degree. As these students work towards their career goals, they unfortunately accrue impressive levels of student loan debt. This is a problem that many people, current students and graduates, know all too well. And plenty of students are pushed even further to somehow cover part of the cost of college along the way.

This leads to thousands of students picking up part-time work to cover as much of the college expenses as humanly possible. It is admirable and necessary for many students, but for some people, it can be difficult finding an open job opportunity.

Recognizing this, the federal government and universities partnered to offer a federally-sponsored program known as Federal Work-Study program to help fill any job gaps. Despite this, the program is a need-based offer, meaning it is reserved for students who qualify under some threshold for financial aid.

Many schools understand this limitation of the program, leading them to step and offer their own work-study opportunities to students. Schools that make this common practice are doing to United States a big favor. A part-time job is a huge help to a student who needs income to support himself or herself, and it allows them to pick up various expenses throughout college, leaving them in a better position financially by graduation.

At The Student Loan Report, we wanted to highlight some of the schools that provide these part-time opportunities to their student bodies. Below, you can find a list of both private colleges and public colleges who offered part-time jobs to their students. Read on to learn which schools dish out the most work!

Methodology

The data for this study was licensed from Peterson’s Financial Aid Dataset pertaining to the academic year of 2015-2016. In regards to the data, 1,277 four-year program schools reported offering part-time work-study-type jobs with compensation to students. Of those schools, 387 offered at least one work-study-type job with compensation.

Aside from school name, location, and private/public labels, the number of part-time, non-federal, work-study jobs and the average dollar compensation per job over the academic year were reported by each college individually.

The data processing for this report was fairly straightforward. Schools were broken out by private and public denominations. Any school that reported zero job offerings was cut out from the list. 262 private schools reported offering at least one job while 126 public schools offered at least one job.

To be included in the next steps, schools needed to offer at least 100 jobs. Any school offering fewer jobs was phased out. This threshold left us with 176 private schools and 95 public schools. 95 public colleges and the top 150 private colleges were included in the report.

After the job cutoff was applied, each school was ranked by the average compensation per job from highest to lowest. Schools that offered higher rates of compensation were ranked higher on the list. Keep in mind that this is total compensation per job over the academic year of 2015-2016. It does not report average hourly wage or hours worked.
