In today’s day and age, if you’re a Millennial in college, then you’re probably going to be graduating with student loan debt after however many years of higher education. Statistically speaking, the chances of this happening to the average joe are pretty good.

Most of this student debt involves federal student loans; in fact, the federal student loan program accounts for over 90 percent of outstanding student loan debt. With that being said, people don’t often talk about the federal student loan counterpart, private student loans.

Although private student loans were much more common before the financial crisis at the end of the last decade, they have been continually rising over the past six or seven years.

On top of this, the cost of education has been on the rise over the past decade which leads many college students to fall back on private student loans after federal options are exhausted.

Why is this an issue? The terms and conditions on a private student loan are usually less favorable than a federal loan. Typically speaking, private student loans come with higher interest rates compared to federal options, and they are far less forgiving when struggling to make a payment.

Despite this, billions in private student loans are taken out each year. One way to work around pesky private student debt is to choose a cost-effective school. In other words, if you pick the right school for your career plan at a good cost, then you will be less likely to take out tens of thousands in private student loans.

The Student Loan Report wanted to highlight (and call out) some of the schools that leaves students with the least (and most) private student loan debt. There are several tables seen below that do just that. There is a calculation in this table, so if it seems confusing, check out the methodology at the bottom for more information.

Table Key

Avg PSL Debt per PSL Grad - This refers to the average private student loan debt per graduate borrower with private student loans. To reiterate, this average only accounts for graduated borrowers who had private student loans.

% of Grads w/ PSL Debt - This refers to the portion of the graduating student body with private student loan debt.

Avg PSL Debt per Grad - This refers to the average private student loan debt per graduating borrower with any financial aid including federal and private student loans.

Methodology

The data for this report came from Peterson’s Financial Aid dataset; this dataset pertained to the graduating class of 2016 specifically. Two pieces of data in this report came from Peterson’s directly, meaning it is self-reported by the colleges themselves.

Two metrics were pulled from Peterson: average private student debt of graduates who borrowed private student loans as well as the percentage of graduate borrowers with private student debt (specifically, private student loan graduate borrowers over the total number of student loan borrowers). Both of these metrics are visible in each table.

A third metric, average private student debt per graduate (all graduates this time) was calculated using these two metrics. In order to find this, the two metrics were simply multiplied together. The average private student debt per graduate figure includes all graduate borrowers of federal, private, and other forms of aid. It is our belief that this is a viable gauge of a student body’s overall reliance on private student debt.

To find which schools left their student body with the most or least private student debt, a simple sorting function was used to list out the top 150 schools, respectively. Both private and public schools were analyzed separately. The results are found in this report.
