student debt per graduate by school

It is now the fourth quarter of 2017, and despite all of the coverage surrounding the issue, student loan debt has not subsided whatsoever. In fact, it is still a leading form of debt in the United States as well as a considerable topic of debate in politics.

Plenty of politicians have put forward different plans addressing a variety of issues - including tuition, general reform, and student loan refinancing. Many have failed outright, while others gained attention without producing results in the end.

Despite all this, student debt continues to grow every year with little change coming to the industry.

There is now over $1.4 trillion in outstanding student loan debt shared over 44 million borrowers. Student debt leads to many financial roadblocks including the inability to buy a house, start a family, or even buy a car after college.

With all this in mind, making an educated decision when choosing a college to attend becomes more important than ever. When you decide on a college, you are also deciding on a tuition bill over four years. It pays to choose an affordable college that won't require any additional student loans.

Here at The Student Loan Report, we are always trying to help students and their families make the best financial decisions when it comes to college. One way we do this is by figuring out which colleges leave graduates with the lowest amounts of student debt.

Using Peterson’s financial aid dataset for the Class of 2016, we created this report detailing the average student debt per graduate from over 1,100 colleges and universities in the United States.

We believe average student debt per graduate gives a better insight into how much debt colleges are leaving students with as compared to average student debt per borrower. The per graduate statistics consider the amount of students who graduate debt-free, which is ignored by similar per borrower studies.

Methodology

The data used in this report was licensed from Peterson’s financial aid dataset for the Class of 2016. Peterson's releases a voluntary survey to all colleges and universities in the United States each year. All data was self-reported by the colleges and universities themselves.

For this study, we analyzed student loan debt data from 1,138 schools in the United States, including student loan debt per borrower, proportion of graduates with student loan debt, and the number of borrowers from the Class of 2016.

The main piece of data in this report is the average student loan debt per graduate from the Class of 2016. These values represent the average debt for all graduates (both borrowers and non-borrowers). In order to find this, we simply multiplied the average student debt per borrower by the proportion of graduates with debt. This resulted in an average for an entire class of graduating students.

Each college was broken out by state and ranked by average student loan debt per graduate. Those with lower averages were ranked higher in the list.

For the overall state rankings, the average student debt per graduate data for each school were aggregated and broken out by state, producing an average student debt per graduate value for each state. Each school’s average debt was weighted by the number of graduates from a given college. States with lower average debt per graduate values were ranked higher on the list.

Using the same method, the average student debt per graduate was found for both public and private schools.
