Introduction

Student loans are a growing issue in our nation - literally.

It is estimated that the outstanding debt grows by $2,726 a second. With over 43 million borrowers holding around $1.3 trillion in debt, many Americans are feeling the weight of their student loans every day.

Aside from being the nation's premier student loan news site, our goal here at the Student Loan Report is to help students and their families make wise decisions regarding their higher education. Student loans are no joke. While completely avoiding debt may not be possible, having an idea of how much debt you may graduate with is essential in choosing a college.

To help students and their families, using Peterson's data from the class of 2015, we compiled and analyzed average student loan debt data from 1,238 colleges and universities around the nation. In the following map and tables, you will find information about how much debt the average student graduates with, and what percentage graduate with debt.

This is the first study for the Class of 2015 that shows the average debt per graduate - a metric that not only takes into account how much debt borrowers graduate with, but also the proportion of all graduates with debt.

For reference, the average student from the Class of 2015 graduated with $16,929 in student loan debt. To see the full list of overall, private, and public school rankings from the entire nation, check out our Student Loan Debt by Graduate Overall Rankings

Interactive Map

The following map shows every school that we analyzed in their respective locations. Zoom in to see all of the schools in a specific area and click on the marker to find out more information about the school. Marker color shows the average debt per graduate: darker = more debt & lighter = less debt. Marker size shows the relative percentage of graduates with debt: larger diameter = higher percentage & smaller diameter = lower percentage with debt.

More Information

Aside from evaluating each school, we also found the average debt per graduate for all schools, as well as private and public schools. Other interesting results are as follows.

  • Average Debt Per Graduate - Overall: $16,929
  • Average Debt Per Graduate - Public: $15,791
  • Average Debt Per Graduate - Private: $19,394
  • About 6 out of 10 students graduated with student loan debt
  • The average debt per graduate ranged from $98 to $53,974

It is interesting to note that Private schools had $3,603, or 22.81%, more debt per graduate than Public schools on average. Private schools are often more expensive, so it is not necessarily surprising to see that the amount is higher.

In addition, it seems that less graduates had debt in the Class of 2015 as compared to the Class of 2014, which was about 7 out of 10 graduates, according to multiple studies.

How We Conducted This Survey

To put together this study, we licensed and used the Peterson's Class of 2015 dataset. Only 4-year schools were used. This is the most recent dataset from Peterson's. Only schools who had reported from 2013 to 2016 were used, and those whose data was from before 2016 were marked with an asterisk. If you do not see a specific school, they most likely chose not to take part in this survey, or did not report since 2013.

To rank the states, we weighted each school based on the number of graduates. So, for example, a school with a higher number of graduates will have more influence on the state's average debt per graduate than a small school.

The average student loan debt per graduate includes loans taken out through any student loan lender, including both the government and private lenders. If a student transferred into a school with student loan debt, they were not included in the results. Furthermore, students who did not graduate, or those who did not graduate with a bachelor's degree (such as a certificate program), were not included.
