student debt repayment success indicator

Introduction

Student loan debt is hampering millions of Americans around the nation with the outstanding amount now at $1.4 trillion. As the problem continues to grow every day, it is now more important than ever for students and their families to consider how they will pay for college and what kind of debt they may face after graduation.

The average borrower from the Class of 2015 graduated with $27,857 in student debt - with many holding much more. This debt can make it difficult to purchase a car or home, save for retirement, and even get married, especially for those who don't have a plan for repayment.

While it would be nice if no student had to take out loans, it is simply not a reality in the United States today. Students loans can be seen as an investment, however, when used responsibly. Students and their families should consider the cost of college, how they will pay for it, and how they will repay any debt before making any decisions.

Here at The Student Loan Report, our goal is to help students and their families make responsible decisions about paying for college so they can be as financially prosperous after graduation as possible. This is why we have put together our first annual Student Debt Repayment Success Indicator report.

In this study, we take a look at a few key metrics that are great indicators of how well borrowers from schools around the nation are repaying their student debt. Though these metrics are just averages, and don't represent how every graduate will fair, they are useful in comparing schools and gaining a general understanding of what to expect.

Defining the Student Debt Repayment Success Indicator (SDRSI)

The Student Debt Repayment Success Indicator, or SDRSI, as we will refer to it from here on out, includes 3 metrics: Student Debt Per Borrower, Early Career Pay, and Default Rate. Student Debt Per Borrower is the average student debt balance of borrowers at graduation. Early Career Pay is the median salary of graduates with 0-5 years of experience. Finally, Default Rate is the percentage of all graduates who have defaulted on their student loans within 3 years after graduation. See the Methodology section for more information about these metrics.

The following shows how SDRSI is calculated:

sdrsi

Early Career Pay is divided by Debt Per Borrower to define the ratio between income and debt. This ratio is multiplied by 1 minus the default rate to factor in the proportion of borrowers who are successful in repayment from each respective school.

A larger value indicates a greater chance of success in student loan repayment. In other words, graduates from schools with high SDRSI scores tend to have higher salaries, lower debt, and fellow alumni are typically also successful in repayment as shown by low default rates. A lower value, on the other hand, means that graduates are more likely to face difficulty in repayment due to lower pay and high debt, on average, as well as the tendency of fellow alumni to struggle with their student debt.

Though these numbers are just averages, we believe the SDRSI gives useful insight into how well graduates from colleges and universities around the nation may be able to repay their debt. Students and families should use it to compare schools that they are interested in to look for any glaring differences. Though there are countless other things to consider when choosing a college, we think SDRSI is especially useful for comparing how student debt may impact students' financial future, and we hope students and their families find it useful too.

Methodology

Only 4-year, non-profit schools were included in this study. In addition, we only included schools that we had all of the necessary data for. If we did not have Early Career Pay, Debt Per Borrower, and/or Default Rate for a school it was excluded.

To find the Debt Per Borrower we used the Peterson's Class of 2015 dataset which was licensed from the company. Schools voluntarily report the data in the annual survey that Peterson's sends out. Schools who did not report in 2016 (for the Class of 2015) were not included.

To find Early Career Pay, we used PayScale's 2016-2017 College Salary Report. PayScale sends out a survey to alumni from schools throughout the nation to find the median early career pay from each.

To find Default Rate, we used the Department of Education's most recent Official Cohort Default Rates for Schools report. This report looks at all borrowers whose federal student loans entered repayment in 2013. The default rate is simply the number of these borrowers who defaulted on their loans divided by the total number of borrowers.
